A current phenomenon made possible via social media is the real-time reporting of seismic activity.

Researchers realized that this activity could be helpful to track the activity in addition to all of the standard technology in use.

It turns out that the sophistication of a smartphone can be even more helpful in tracking earthquakes as they occurred.
The point of this approach was to create a more accurate and speedy warning system for those in the vicinity to help prevent surprises.
