Why can't I reinstall Windows Media Player?

After trying Windows XP and going back to Win98, I no longer can open Windows Media Player 7.1 In fact, I cannot uninstall it or reinstall a new one from the website. When I click on the icon on my desktop, I get the error message "The WMPLAYER.EXE file is linked to missing export KERNEL.32.DLL:GetUserDefaultUILanguage" When I click Okay on that message I get the message "C:\Program Files\Window Media Player\WMPLAYER.EXE A device attached to the system is not functioning" What can I do to fix this? I tried installing Win98 again, but it didn't change anything.

A: You may want to remove the existing media player program prior to installing the new version Go to the Control Panel and double-click the Add/Remove Program icon Click on the Windows Setup tab at the top then find the Multimedia selection Take the check mark out of the box in front of the Media player option If installing the newer version does not help, the problem could be in your hardware, specifically the sound card Check your Device manager (the System icon in your Control Panel) and look for a yellow or red circle next to the device You may also want to remove the entry from the device manager and re-detect the device which would essentially re-install it in the operating system You can download (free) the latest media player with MP3 support from Microsoft at www.microsoft.com/windows/mediaplayer/sc-features.asp.
