Before doing anything extraordinary You should be sure to have your computer up to date Especially your windows update antivirus updates and ad ware remover updates.

If you don’t have an ad ware remover or an antivirus program you can do a search online and there are some you can use for free.

After that run the scans to make sure there are no malicious programs on your computer.

What you should first do is Check to make sure the driver you are installing is the correct one for that modem and for your operating system (windows98) You want to get the latest one from the manufacturers Web site.

Second if it is an internal modem (inside the computer).

Unplug the power from the back Then you should open the case unless it voids your warranty Touch the metal area (not the electric boards) Find the modem card Carefully pull it straight out It will be a little tight And then sit it back carefully Make sure it goes as far down as it can go

If the card is improperly seated it will cause problems.

If it is an external modem then make sure that the cables are properly inserted.

If this doesn’t work then you may have a defective card.
