Problems with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 & Diamond Video Drivers.

This question was answered on June 15, 1999. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.

IF YOU HAVE installed Microsoft Internet Explorer 5, be careful when updating any of your Diamond video drivers According to the Internet Explorer release notes, if you have installed Microsoft Internet Explorer 5, and then upgrade a Diamond video driver that you download from their web site, your computer may not restart!!! The Diamond update overwrites COMCTL32.DLL, says Microsoft, which may cripple your system

If you want to upgrade your Diamond drivers, they say to do this:

1 Make a backup copy of

(Windows 95/98) WINDOWS\SYSTEM\COMCTL32.DLL

(Windows NT) WINNT\SYSTEM\COMCTL32.DLL

2 Install the Diamond drivers

3 Use an emergency boot disk to start your computer

4 Once you have restarted in safe mode, copy the backed-up COMCTL32.DLL back to your system folder, eject the floppy disk, and restart your computer

If you have already installed the drivers and have a crippled system, here is what to do:

1 Boot your system using an emergency boot disk.

2 Go to the MS-DOS prompt, and go to the directory where your IE 5 files are Microsoft says that if you downloaded them, they are probably in C:\Windows Update Setup Files Otherwise they are on the CD-ROM

3 If you are using Windows 95/98, extract the DLL with this command: extract /e /l c:\temp\setupw95.cab\comctl32.dll

4 If you are using Windows NT 4.0, extract the DLL with this command: extract /e /l c:\temp\setupnt.cab comctl32.dll

5 Copy the DLL from the TEMP folder to the appropriate system folder, as in above, and take out the floppy disk

6 Reboot your computer On March 24, Diamond released updated drivers for its Viper V550, Monster 3D II X100 and Monster Fusion Z100 graphics accelerators The fix will avoid the DLL overwriting problem You can get the new drivers at http://www.diamondmm.com/products/support/ie5.html
