In order to accurately answer your question we would really need to know the type of internet connection you are using Assuming that you are using a ethernet adapter with highspeed - There are a few critical areas to check while troubleshooting a network issue

would be to release and renew your IP address This can be accomplished in 2000 by clicking on run in the start menu and typing CMD then once the command prompt appears typing IPCONFIG /RELEASE then wait for the system to release your old address then once the prompt appears again typing IPCONFIG / RENEW to obtain a new address

Also you can go into the properties for your adapter in "Network and Dial-up Connections" and check the settings for "TCP/IP" to ensure it is using DHCP and or whatever settings your ISP or Router specifies.

Another would be to restart any equipment such as a router or Cable/DSL modem.

The final approach would be to look through the Microsoft knowledge base and see about rebuilding the "TCP/IP" protocol.
